Did you know that there is nothing like special RC bearings? I don’t have exact market size information for ball bearings for radio controlled models, however it can be considered as a niche market within the larger market for ball bearings.

How to pick a good bearing?

Well, there is a standard ABEC. ABEC stands for Annular Bearing Engineering Committee, a set of standards for the accuracy of ball bearings established by the Anti-Friction Bearing Manufacturers Association (AFBMA).

ABEC ratings specify tolerance grades for various dimensions and parameters of bearings, including roundness, parallelism, and surface finish of the ball and inner and outer races, as well as radial play, axial play, and runout. The higher the ABEC rating, the more precise the bearing is manufactured to be.

The ABEC scale ranges from 1 to 9, with 1 being the lowest and 9 the highest level of precision. Bearings with ABEC ratings of 7 or higher are typically used for high-speed applications and demand higher quality and higher costs.

Note that ABEC ratings are a widely recognized industry standard, but are not the only factor to consider when choosing a bearing for a particular application. Other factors such as load capacity, speed, temperature range, and durability also play important roles.

How to determine what bearing I need?

First you should look for the right dimension of the bearing. The dimensions of a ball bearing are specified by the size of its inner and outer diameters, its width, and the diameter of the balls it contains. Some of the commonly used specifications include:

1. Bore diameter (ID): The inner diameter of the bearing.
2. Outer diameter (OD): The outer diameter of the bearing.
3. Width: The thickness of the bearing, usually measured at the widest part of the outer race.

4. Ball diameter: The diameter of the balls that run between the inner and outer races.
5. Crown height: The height of the outer race in relation to the balls.
6. Tolerance: The allowable deviation from specified dimensions, typically expressed as a tolerance grade in accordance with ABEC standards or other industry specifications.

These dimensions, along with other factors such as material and load capacity, determine the performance and suitability of a ball bearing for a particular application.
